About Us

An independent comparison service built for travellers and locals who want an honest look at car rental across New Zealand.

Independent 30+ suppliers compared No fleet, no bias

Who we are

4Drive NZ is a comparison website, not a rental company. We do not own a single car, run a single counter or operate a single depot anywhere in New Zealand. What we do is pull together live offers from more than 30 trusted Kiwi and international suppliers - the small local operators you find at regional airports as well as the larger names most travellers already recognise - and lay them side by side so you can see real prices, real supplier ratings and the actual pickup conditions before you commit to anything.

We started this project after noticing how often the "cheap" headline rate on a rental search turned into a very different number once fuel policy, excess, one-way fees and young driver surcharges were added at the counter. A comparison engine that shows those details up front - rather than burying them in a contract you only read after landing - seemed like the more useful way to shop for a car in a country where distances, weather and left-hand traffic already ask enough of a first-time visitor.

How the comparison works

You tell our search widget where and when you need a car - an airport code like AKL or CHC, a city, or simply a pin on the map - and our engine checks live availability and pricing across the suppliers operating in that area. Results are ranked by price and by supplier rating, and each listing carries the actual conditions attached to that specific offer: insurance excess, mileage limits, minimum driver age, and whether free cancellation applies. When you pick an offer, you complete the booking directly with that supplier's own platform. We never take payment ourselves and we never touch your card details - our job ends at showing you the comparison clearly.

Why compare instead of booking direct

Rental pricing in New Zealand moves constantly with season, fuel surcharges and regional demand - a Queenstown SUV in ski season and the same car in Dunedin in April can sit NZ$40 apart on any given day. Checking a single supplier's site only shows you one slice of that market. Comparing side by side is the fastest way to see whether a Kiwi operator is genuinely undercutting the international brands that week, or whether a slightly higher rate comes with a lower excess and free cancellation that makes it the better deal overall.

What we don't do

We don't guarantee a fixed price, because live rates change with demand the same way flight prices do - what we guarantee is that the price you see reflects the offer as listed by the supplier at that moment. We don't claim 24/7 phone support, because support is provided by the supplier you book with, not by us. And we don't pretend to be a rental company: every car, every counter and every contract belongs to the supplier named on your booking confirmation. If you'd like more detail on how listings, ratings and cancellation terms work in practice, our FAQ page covers the questions we get asked most often, and reviews from travellers who have compared and booked through the site give a candid picture of what to expect.

Coverage across New Zealand

Our comparison currently spans both islands - from Auckland Airport and Wellington in the north to Queenstown, Christchurch and Dunedin in the south, plus smaller hubs like Nelson, Rotorua and Picton where ferry logistics and one-way rentals matter more than in the big cities. If you're planning a trip that crosses Cook Strait, or you're simply after the cheapest weekly rate in your region, the comparison works the same way everywhere: real offers, real conditions, no guesswork.
